Nerve Pain Supplements Ingredients: The Common Names and What Each Is Studied For

Nerve pain supplements ingredients usually include alpha lipoic acid, magnesium, L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10, turmeric and B vitamins. Each has its own research, and most of it is limited. Flow Nerves lists six names and prints no milligram for any, so a study dose cannot be matched to a capsule.

The usual names

What ingredients are in nerve pain supplements?

Nerve pain supplements usually combine a few familiar names: alpha lipoic acid, magnesium, a carnitine form, coenzyme Q10, turmeric and sometimes B vitamins or a herb.

The names alone tell you little. The form, the amount and your own health matter more.

IngredientStudied for, per the sources
Alpha lipoic acidDiabetic neuropathy; limited results (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements)
MagnesiumA needed mineral for nerve impulses (NIH ODS, Magnesium)
CarnitineAcetyl-L-carnitine is the form named for nerves (MSK, Carnitine)
Coenzyme Q10One 2022 add-on trial in diabetic nerve pain (MSK, Coenzyme Q10)
TurmericNot enough known for any purpose (NCCIH, Turmeric)

Amounts

Why do the amounts of nerve supplement ingredients matter?

Amounts matter because every study used a set dose. Without a printed amount, you cannot tell if a capsule holds more, less or about the same.

A proprietary blend lists a total weight, and the names inside in order of weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts labels). The bars show a few study and safety amounts. They are not what is in a capsule.

A reference amount says what was tested or advised, not what works for you. No study tested Flow Nerves. (NIH ODS, Magnesium)

600 mg a day: the amount the diabetic neuropathy trials used, mostly by vein for 3 weeks600 mg

  • L-carnitine (stomach effects)

3,000 mg a day: where nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea are reported3,000 mg

  • L-carnitine (thyroid trial)

    Label amount: not printed

    2,000 to 4,000 mg a day: the amounts in a 2001 thyroid trial4,000 mg

Dashed bars: what the label prints, which is nothing in the material we have. Solid bars: the reference amount from a study or authority. Each pair is drawn to its own scale, so compare the pair, not one pair with another.

Forms

Does the form of an ingredient change the research?

Yes. The form can change both the evidence and the cautions. L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine are not the same, and MSK discusses the second for diabetic neuropathy (MSK, Carnitine).

Turmeric extract is another case: curcumin products vary in how much curcumin they hold (NCCIH, Turmeric). Flow Nerves does not say which carnitine form it uses.

What are the six ingredients on the Flow Nerves label?

The six names are magnesium glycinate, alpha lipoic acid, butcher's broom root extract, L-carnitine, turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids per the seller's page) and coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone).

No Supplement Facts image was supplied, so check your own bottle. The ingredients page has one card for each name.

FAQ

Flow Nerves questions people ask

What is the most common ingredient in nerve supplements?

Alpha lipoic acid and magnesium appear often. Appearing often does not mean proven. NCCIH finds no clear conclusions on alpha lipoic acid (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements).

Do nerve supplements contain B vitamins?

Many do, but Flow Nerves does not list one. Low B12 can cause numbness and tingling, and a doctor can test for it (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12).

Why do nerve formulas list many ingredients?

More names look more complete, but we found no source showing that blends work better than one ingredient.

What does proprietary blend mean on a label?

It means the ingredients are listed together under one name with a total weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts labels). Flow Nerves prints no milligrams at all in the material we have.

Which nerve supplement ingredients interact with medicines?

Several do. Warfarin links exist for turmeric, coenzyme Q10 and L-carnitine, and ALA may add to diabetes medicine (MSK, Turmeric)(Mayo Clinic, Coenzyme Q10)(MSK, Carnitine)(MSK, Alpha-lipoic acid).
