How to Read a Supplement Label, Using Flow Nerves as the Example

To read a supplement label, check four things in order: the front claim, the Supplement Facts panel, any proprietary blend, and the directions and warnings. A blend lists names with one total weight. The Flow Nerves front says "NERVE SUPPORT*" and names no amount, and we have not seen its Supplement Facts panel.

How do you read a supplement label?

Read a supplement label from the front claim to the fine print, in four steps. Each step answers one question, and the last one is the question you should ask the seller if the label cannot answer it.

  1. The front: what does it claim?

Note the exact words. A claim with a star leads to a statement that says FDA has not evaluated it (FDA, Dietary supplement Q&A).

  2. The Supplement Facts panel: what is in it, and how much?

Look for each ingredient, its amount per serving and the serving size.

  3. Any proprietary blend: how big is each share?

A blend groups ingredients under one name with one total weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts labels).

  4. Directions and warnings: who should ask first?

Check the dose, the timing, the age limit and the medicine cautions.

The same four steps work on any bottle. The rest of this guide applies them to Flow Nerves.

Proprietary blends

What does proprietary blend mean on a supplement?

A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed under one name, such as "Proprietary Blend", with one total weight for the group. The U.S. rule on supplement labels says the ingredients inside a blend are listed in descending order of weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts labels).

That order tells you which ingredient there is most of. It does not by itself tell you how much of each. So with a blend, ask for the milligrams of each name per serving. The table sets a blend beside a panel that lists every amount.

QuestionEvery amount listedProprietary blend
Do I see each ingredient's amount?YesNot necessarily; ask
Do I see a total for the group? Not neededYes, one total weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts labels)
Can I compare with a study dose?Yes, name by nameOnly if the seller gives each amount
Can I add it up with another supplement?YesHard to do safely; ask a pharmacist

Flow Nerves is an unusual case. The seller's page calls its six names a "proprietary blend", yet no blend total or amount appears in the material we have. Our proprietary blend page goes deeper.

A worked example

What does the front of the Flow Nerves label show?

The front of the Flow Nerves label shows a brand, a claim and a count: FlowNerves, "NERVE SUPPORT*" and 30 CAPSULES. It names no ingredient and no amount. Tap each numbered spot to see what it means.

Tap a number to read that part of the label.

  1. PREMIUM FORMULA

A seller phrase. It names no standard, grade or test, and says nothing about amounts.

  2. FlowNerves

The name is one word on the bottle and two on this site's pages (Flow Nerves). 'Flow' is white and 'Nerves' is teal.

  3. NERVE SUPPORT*

The label's one claim. The asterisk points to a statement that was not on the supplied image; in the U.S. it normally leads to the FDA disclaimer. It promises no result and gives no amount.

  4. Icon: spine

A small round line icon of a spine. It is decoration; it names no ingredient or claim.

  5. Icon: nerve cell

A small round line icon of a nerve cell. It is decoration.

  6. Icon: joint

A small round line icon of a joint. It is decoration; the product is not sold for joints.

  7. 30 CAPSULES

A bottle of 30 capsules. The sales page counts that as 30 days at one capsule a day.

  8. DIETARY SUPPLEMENT

The legal category. A dietary supplement is not a drug, and FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold.

Words on the label

Which label words are claims and which can you check?

Words such as "premium" or "certified" are claims, and only an amount, a lot number or a test report can be checked. FDA generally does not approve supplement claims or labeling before use, and the maker is responsible for them (FDA, Dietary supplement Q&A).

Words you may seeWhat they tell you
"NERVE SUPPORT*"A claim with a star. The star leads to the FDA disclaimer. It names no result and no amount.
"PREMIUM FORMULA"A seller phrase. It names no grade, test or standard.
"Certified" or a sealNCCIH says a word like this does not necessarily guarantee quality or consistency (NCCIH, Using supplements wisely).
"Clinically studied"Check who was studied, at what dose and in what form. FTC staff say health claims need randomized, controlled human testing (FTC, Health products guidance).
A lot numberA reference to one batch. It is not a lab report on its own.

Flow Nerves lists a lot reference of FN-26/IF-7863 on the seller's materials. It is a seller reference, not lab proof, and no lab report is published.

The fine print

What else should you check on a supplement bottle?

Check the directions, the age limit, the warnings, the expiry date and who made it. Makers must follow the federal manufacturing rules for supplements (21 CFR Part 111, Manufacturing rules). No source tells us who made Flow Nerves, and the label images name no maker.

  • Directions. The seller says one capsule daily with a meal and a full glass of water. Confirm on your bottle.
  • Who it is for. Adults 18 and older, per the brief.
  • Allergens and other ingredients. Not in the material we have; read the panel on your bottle.
  • Storage and expiry. The seller's page says cool and dry, with a date on the bottle. We have not seen that text on a label.
  • Medicine cautions. Ask a pharmacist, and bring the bottle.
A label cannot tell you whether it is right for you

Keep taking prescribed medicine. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take diabetes medicine or insulin, a blood thinner, blood pressure medicine, thyroid medicine, antibiotics or seizure medicine, have kidney or liver disease, are pregnant or nursing, or have surgery soon. Numb or tingling hands and feet need a doctor first (Mayo Clinic, Peripheral neuropathy).

FAQ

Flow Nerves questions people ask

What is a Supplement Facts panel?

It is the boxed list on a supplement label that gives the serving size, each dietary ingredient and its amount. U.S. rules set how it is laid out, including how a proprietary blend is shown (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts labels). We have not seen the Flow Nerves panel.

Why would a company use a proprietary blend?

We found no source that gives their reasons, so we will not guess. What we can say is what a blend does for the reader: it shows a total weight and an order of names, and may leave each share unknown (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts labels).

Does a star on a label claim mean it is approved?

No. A star usually leads to the statement that FDA has not evaluated the claim and that the product is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. FDA does not approve supplements before sale (FDA, Dietary supplement Q&A).

How do I know a supplement is what the label says?

A label alone cannot show it. Look for amounts you can check, a lot number and a test report you can ask for. For Flow Nerves, the lot reference is a seller reference and no lab report is published.

Can the same ingredient differ between brands?

Yes. Forms and amounts differ. NCCIH says oral curcumin products vary in how much curcumin they contain (NCCIH, Turmeric). L-carnitine, tartrate and acetyl-L-carnitine are different compounds, and the Flow Nerves form is not stated.

Who checks supplement labels in the U.S.?

FDA does not approve supplements or their labeling before they are sold, and the firm is responsible for its product and claims (FDA, Dietary supplement Q&A). Makers must follow the federal manufacturing rules (21 CFR Part 111, Manufacturing rules). Report a bad reaction to FDA's MedWatch.
