Nerve Supplement Side Effects: Stomach Upset, Medicine Clashes and When to Call

Nerve supplement side effects reported in our sources are mostly stomach upset such as nausea and diarrhea, plus clashes with medicines. Each of the six Flow Nerves names has its own list. Flow Nerves prints no amounts, so we cannot match any study dose to a capsule. Stop and call a doctor if something feels wrong.

The usual ones

What are the common nerve supplement side effects?

The common nerve supplement side effects in our sources are nausea, stomach cramps and diarrhea. They tend to show up with larger amounts.

NIH says high doses of magnesium from supplements often cause diarrhea, and its upper limit for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg a day for adults (NIH ODS, Magnesium). About 3 g a day of carnitine can cause nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea and a fishy body odor (NIH ODS, Carnitine).

Those are limit and study figures, not amounts in Flow Nerves.

Dose context

How do study doses compare with what Flow Nerves prints?

Study doses cannot be set beside Flow Nerves, because the label prints no amount for any name. The bars show the reference amounts that sources give, next to a dashed bar for the missing figure.

Medicines

Can nerve supplements cause medicine side effects?

Yes, some can clash with medicines. Magnesium can weaken some antibiotics, and alpha lipoic acid may add to diabetes medicine, so low blood sugar is the concern (MSK, Magnesium) (MSK, Alpha-lipoic acid).

Coenzyme Q10 might make warfarin work less well (Mayo Clinic, Coenzyme Q10). Low blood sugar can feel shaky, hungry, dizzy or confused, and very low levels need prompt care (NIDDK, Low blood glucose).

Keep taking prescribed medicine.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist first with diabetes medicine, blood thinners, blood pressure, thyroid or seizure medicine, or kidney or liver disease.

When to call

When should you stop a nerve supplement and call a doctor?

Stop the supplement and call a doctor if you feel unwell after taking it, or if stomach upset does not pass. Call 911 for swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, chest pain or fainting.

You can also send a report to FDA's MedWatch program (FDA, MedWatch). For placed orders, the Flow Nerves desk is +1 (302) 200-3480.
