Neuropathy Supplement Treatment: Why a Capsule Is Not a Care Plan

Neuropathy supplement treatment is a mix-up of two things. Treatment is a doctor's plan built on the cause, such as diabetes. A supplement is a food-type product that FDA does not approve before sale. Flow Nerves is a supplement, its label claims only NERVE SUPPORT*, and no study of it exists in our sources.

Care plan

What counts as neuropathy treatment?

Neuropathy treatment is care that a clinician plans after tests find the cause. It starts with a diagnosis, not with a product.

MedlinePlus says a doctor diagnoses diabetic neuropathy with a physical exam and nerve tests (MedlinePlus, Diabetic neuropathy). The American Diabetes Association calls keeping blood glucose on target your best line of defense (ADA, Neuropathy and diabetes). Neither page lists a supplement as the plan.

Supplement vs medicine

Is a dietary supplement a neuropathy treatment?

No. A dietary supplement is not a medicine, and FDA does not have the authority to approve supplements before they are sold (FDA, Dietary supplement Q&A).

That is why the front of the Flow Nerves label says only "NERVE SUPPORT*". The star normally leads to the FDA disclaimer: not evaluated, and not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

The seller's page goes further with "help relieve occasional nerve discomfort". FTC staff say a health claim needs human trials (FTC, Health products guidance). We found none of Flow Nerves.

Keep taking prescribed medicine.

Never stop or change a medicine because of a supplement. A supplement is not a replacement.

Evidence

What do studies say about the single ingredients?

Some single ingredients have been studied, but mostly alpha lipoic acid in people with diabetes, and mostly by vein. The results are mixed.

NCCIH says most alpha lipoic acid studies are small and differ in dose, form and length, leading to "no clear conclusions" (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements). A pooled review tested 600 mg a day by vein for 3 weeks; for pills above that, it is unclear (Mijnhout 2012, ALA meta-analysis).

Flow Nerves names six ingredients and prints no milligram for any of them, so those study doses cannot be matched to a capsule.

Doctor first

When should you see a doctor instead of trying a supplement?

See a doctor first for any new numbness, tingling, weakness or pain in your hands or feet. Mayo Clinic says to seek medical care right away for these signs (Mayo Clinic, Peripheral neuropathy).

  1. Sudden weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, chest pain, trouble breathingThese can signal an emergency. Do not wait.Call 911
  2. Swelling of the lips, face or throat, hives, or trouble breathing after a supplementAllergic reactions to butcher's broom can be serious, WebMD says. Stop and call 911.Call 911
  3. Confusion, shaking, sweating or a very fast heartbeat if you take diabetes medicineThese can be signs of low blood sugar, and very low blood sugar needs treatment right away, NIDDK says.Call 911
  4. New tingling, weakness or pain in your hands or feetMayo Clinic says to seek medical care right away. Early diagnosis gives the best chance of managing symptoms.See a doctor
  5. A foot sore that is infected or will not healCDC lists it among the reasons to call your doctor if you have diabetes.See a doctor
  6. Falls, lost coordination or muscle weaknessMayo Clinic lists them as symptoms to have checked.See a doctor

  8. Changes in digestion, urination or sexual function, dizziness or faintingCDC lists these with nerve damage in people with diabetes.See a doctor

Signs from (Mayo Clinic, Peripheral neuropathy) and (CDC, Diabetes and nerve damage). This list is not complete, and a supplement is never a reason to wait.

The product

Where does Flow Nerves fit, if it is not a treatment?

Flow Nerves is a once-a-day capsule you may add to your routine after a doctor or pharmacist agrees. Take one capsule with a meal and a full glass of water, and confirm the directions on your bottle.

Its fair strengths are a typed-out ingredient list, a simple routine and a stated 60-day promise. Its gaps are no milligrams, no named maker and no study. The live checkout is final on price.

FAQ

Flow Nerves questions people ask

Does any supplement count as a neuropathy treatment?

No source we read says so. Care for neuropathy is a doctor's plan built on the cause. A supplement is not approved by FDA before sale, and Flow Nerves makes only the label claim NERVE SUPPORT*.

Can Flow Nerves replace my neuropathy medicine?

No. Keep taking prescribed medicine and never stop or change it because of a supplement. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first.

Should I tell my doctor I take a supplement?

Yes. Tell every provider about every supplement, even before surgery, because some affect bleeding or anesthesia (NCCIH, Using supplements wisely).
