Neuropathy Supplements Research: A Plain Map of the Main Studies

Neuropathy supplements research is thin and mixed. The best-known work is on alpha lipoic acid in people with diabetes, mostly given by vein. Other Flow Nerves names have little or different evidence. No study of Flow Nerves exists in our sources, and its label prints no dose to compare.

The main trials

What does the research on alpha lipoic acid show?

Alpha lipoic acid has the most research of the six names, and it is mixed. Four trials in 1,258 people with diabetic polyneuropathy tested 600 mg a day by vein for 3 weeks (Ziegler 2004, ALA meta-analysis).

The pooled result favored alpha lipoic acid on symptom scores. The trials came from a drug maker's database and used a vein drip, not a capsule.

A second review reached a similar finding for the vein dose. It said it is unclear whether oral doses above 600 mg a day are clinically relevant, and one 4-year trial reported more serious side effects on alpha lipoic acid than placebo (Mijnhout 2012, ALA meta-analysis).

The rest

What about the other five names?

The other five names have little or no nerve research of their own. Our sources say the following, name by name.

Magnesium glycinateHelps nerve impulses work; NIH does not mention neuropathyGlycinate not named
L-carnitineAcetyl-L-carnitine, a different form, is the one linked to diabetic neuropathyForm unknown

Coenzyme Q10One 2022 placebo-controlled add-on trial is mentionedEarly evidence
Butcher's broomTrials of the plant alone are lackingNo dose found

Dose gap

How do study doses compare with a Flow Nerves capsule?

They cannot be compared, because Flow Nerves prints no milligram for any name. The bars show amounts a study or authority used, and a dashed bar for the missing Flow Nerves amount.

Reference amounts are what a study used. They are not what is in a capsule.

Dashed bars: what the label prints, which is nothing in the material we have. Solid bars: the reference amount from a study or authority. Each pair is drawn to its own scale, so compare the pair, not one pair with another.

Limits

Why can't these studies prove a benefit for Flow Nerves?

They tested one ingredient at a time, at set doses, in specific groups of people. Flow Nerves is a blend of six, in amounts we cannot see.

FTC staff guidance says a health claim needs competent and reliable scientific evidence, in the form of randomized, controlled human clinical testing (FTC, Health products guidance). We found none for this product.

  • Different form, dose and route than a capsule
  • No trial of the six together

Next steps

What should you do with this research?

Use it to ask better questions of your doctor, not to pick a capsule. Ask which cause was found, whether a supplement could interact with your medicine, and whether a blood test fits.

FAQ

Flow Nerves questions people ask

Is there good research on neuropathy supplements?

Some, but it is limited. Most is on alpha lipoic acid in people with diabetes, often by vein. NCCIH says most studies are small and give no clear conclusions (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements).

Has Flow Nerves been tested in a study?

Not in any source we read. We found no published trial of Flow Nerves, so we cannot say what it does.

What dose of alpha lipoic acid was studied?

Trials in people with diabetes used 600 mg a day, mostly by vein for 3 weeks (Ziegler 2004, ALA meta-analysis). Flow Nerves prints no alpha lipoic acid amount, so it cannot be set beside that.
