Turmeric and Blood Thinners: What Curcumin Sources Say

Turmeric and blood thinners need a doctor's check. Memorial Sloan Kettering says turmeric may increase the risk of bleeding if you take warfarin or other blood thinners. Flow Nerves lists turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids per the seller's page) and prints no milligram amount, so the label cannot tell you how much it holds.

The risk

Can you take turmeric with blood thinners?

Only with your doctor's approval. Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) says to talk to your provider if you take warfarin or other blood thinners, because turmeric may increase your risk of bleeding (MSK, Turmeric).

MSK bases this on preclinical and case-report evidence, meaning lab work and single patient stories, not large trials (MSK, Turmeric). That is a reason to ask, not a measured risk figure.

Keep taking your blood thinner as prescribed. Never stop it because of a supplement.

Beyond bleeding

What else do turmeric sources warn about?

Two more cautions come up: the liver and other medicines. The sources are from different organizations and cover different points.

PointWhat the source says
BleedingMay increase risk with warfarin and other blood thinners (MSK) (MSK, Turmeric)
LiverHighly bioavailable curcumin formulations may harm your liver (NCCIH) (NCCIH, Turmeric)
Pain medicinesMay lessen the effect of aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen (MSK) (MSK, Turmeric)
Benefit"We don't know enough" to conclude it helps any health purpose (NCCIH) (NCCIH, Turmeric)

On this label

How much turmeric is in Flow Nerves?

The label does not say. The seller's page lists turmeric extract with 95% curcuminoids, and no milligram amount is printed in the material we have.

NCCIH adds that oral curcumin products vary in how much curcumin they hold (NCCIH, Turmeric). So even a known extract strength would not give a dose without the amount.

Two other Flow Nerves names, coenzyme Q10 and L-carnitine, also have blood thinner notes in the sources. The steps below start with the medicine check.

  1. 01

Check the seal and your medicines

On a new bottle, check the seal and read the label. List any diabetes, blood thinner, blood pressure, thyroid or seizure medicine you take and ask your doctor or pharmacist first.

  2. 02

    Pick a meal

The sales page and the brief say to take it with a meal. Choose a meal you eat every day, such as breakfast, so the habit sticks.

  3. 03

Take 1 capsule with a full glass of water

One capsule a day. Swallow it with a full glass of water. Do not double up if you miss a day; confirm the directions on your bottle.

  4. 04

Keep a simple log and see your doctor

Note sleep, stomach upset, dizziness or anything odd. Keep every prescribed medicine going, and stop and ask a clinician if you react. New numbness or tingling needs a visit, not a log.

Before surgery

Should you stop turmeric before surgery?

Tell your surgeon about every supplement, well in advance. NCCIH says some supplements may increase bleeding or affect anesthesia, so your providers need as much notice as possible (NCCIH, Using supplements wisely).

Your surgeon, not a website, decides what to pause and when.
